Anencephaly is a congenital malformation in which the brain does not normally form. A suppression in the development of the telencephalon results in an absent forebrain, but with eyes that may contain glial nodules, intravitreal neovascularization [neovascularization - vitreoretinal] and partial retinal detachment. Because the ocular anlarge forms the defective brain development must occur after normal neural tube closure and telencephalic formation.
