The term ophthalmia nodosa was introduced to designate granulomatous inflammation around caterpillar hairs in the conjunctiva. A round gray swelling forms around where each embedded hair and focal necrotizing inflammation is present. A similar reaction can occur around other foreign particles, such as the fibers used in the manufactureof certain toys.
